District Rating Badges

A free badge any school district can put on its own website to show its rating on this site. It is generated from the same figures published on the district’s page — nothing is calculated specially for the badge. Available for the 12,121 districts across 50 states that have a published rating.

What the badge says — and what it does not

The badge states four things: the rating out of 10, the rating word (Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average or Poor), the district’s percentile within its own state, and the assessment the rating was computed from.

It is not an award

The badge never uses the words award, winner, certified or endorsed, because none of them would be true. It republishes a measurement. A district that scores 2/10 can display the badge on exactly the same terms as one that scores 10/10.

The rank is within one state only

Percentiles are calculated against other districts in the same state, because states use different assessments and the results are not comparable across state lines. The badge therefore reads “76th percentile among Ohio school districts” and never claims a national rank.

Districts with no published rating get no badge. The endpoint returns a 404 rather than a zero, an empty badge or a placeholder.

The three sizes

Each is a plain SVG: it stays sharp at any resolution, needs no JavaScript, and carries its own alt text for screen readers.

Get your district’s badge

Paste your district’s page address from this site, or its NCES LEAID, and the embed code appears below. You can find your district through the state directory.

Terms of use

  • Free to use, for any district with a published rating, commercially or otherwise.
  • Keep the link. The badge must stay linked to that district’s page on this site, so a reader can check the figure and see how it was calculated.
  • Do not alter the image or re-word what it says. If a number looks wrong to you, tell us — we would rather fix it than have it edited in place.
  • It updates itself. The badge is generated on request, so when a district’s rating changes the embedded image changes with it. You do not need to do anything.
  • No fee, no registration, and no requirement to link anything else.

How the rating is calculated

Ratings come from the share of students proficient in reading and maths on state assessments, percentile-ranked against other districts in the same state. The badge names the exact assessment and year it used. Full detail is on How Ratings Work and Methodology; sources, limitations and our correction log are on Data & Corrections.
