What You Get From a School District Lookup
Each result names the public school district for that zip code or address and shows its figures from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data, 2024–25: enrollment, number of schools, grades served and the district office’s contact details. Per-pupil spending comes from the US Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of School System Finances for FY2024.
Where a district is rated, the 1–10 rating comes from the share of its students scoring proficient in reading and math on state tests, ranked against the other districts in the same state. A 9/10 in Ohio and a 9/10 in Texas come from different tests, so they can’t be compared directly. See how ratings work →
Zip Code or Street Address?
A zip code is a mail-delivery area, not a school boundary, and one zip code can be split between two or more school districts. A zip code search shows the district our data assigns to that zip code, which may not be the district for every home inside it.
For a more precise answer, use the By Address tab and enter the street, city and state. The address is located with OpenStreetMap and checked against the NCES school district boundary maps, so the result names the district for that spot — both of them, in states that run separate elementary and high school districts — along with the nearest schools that district runs. Because federal data has no attendance zones, always confirm your assigned school with the district.

How do I find my school district by zip code?

What school district am I in?
Your district depends on your home address, not only your zip code. Use the By Address tab for an answer matched to district boundaries, then confirm enrollment with the district office.
Are school district ratings comparable between states?
No. Each state gives its own reading and math tests, so ratings are percentile-ranked only against other districts in the same state.
Is the nearest school the one my child is assigned to?
Not necessarily. Federal school data records where schools are but not their attendance zones, so the closest school may not be the one your address is assigned to. The district can confirm your school.
What high school am I zoned to?
Start with the district: search your street address above to see which district serves your home. The specific high school inside that district is set by its attendance zone, which federal data does not record, so confirm the school with the district's own school locator. In states with separate elementary and high school districts, the high school is run by a different district than the elementary school — see how split districts work.
Can one address be in two school districts?
Yes. In Illinois, California, New Jersey, Arizona and Montana, among others, a home is in an elementary district for the lower grades and a separate high school district for grades 9–12. Searching by street address returns every district that serves the location, not just one.
