About SchoolDistrictFinder
SchoolDistrictFinder.us is a free lookup of US public school districts. Anyone can search a ZIP code or a street address to see which district serves it, how that district's students perform on state reading and math tests compared with other districts in the same state, and its enrollment and spending. There is no account, no paywall and no fee for districts to be listed. The site is supported by advertising.
Coverage: 33,000+ ZIP codes and 10,000+ districts in all 50 states, from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data 2024–25, US Department of Education EDFacts, 25 state assessment programs and Census Bureau school finance data.
Original research
34.1 million Americans live outside their ZIP code's main school district (2026-10-19). Using 2020 Census population, we measured how often a ZIP code fails to identify a family's school district: 10.19% of residents live in a different district from the one most of their ZIP code is in, and 33.7% of ZIP codes are shared between districts. The page includes state-by-state figures, the most divided ZIP codes, and a downloadable table for every ZIP code.
Data you can use
- zip-district-splits.csv — every populated ZIP code area with its district shares (2020 Census).
- districts.csv — every rated district with its rating, state percentile, enrollment and spending.
- JSON API — per-ZIP data with no key required.
All of it is free under CC BY 4.0. Please credit SchoolDistrictFinder.us and link to the page you used.
How the ratings work, in one paragraph
Each district's rating is its percentile among districts in the same state on the share of students scoring proficient or better in reading and math, converted to a 1–10 scale. Ratings are never compared across state lines, because every state gives its own tests. Spending, staffing and district size are not part of the rating. Every district page names the exact test and school year behind its number. Full method.
Writing about a specific district
- Please describe a rating as a measurement (“rated 8 out of 10, 78th percentile among Ohio districts”), not as an award or ranking by us.
- Check the source and school year named on the district's page. Some states publish newer results than others.
- District assignment by ZIP code is approximate. For a specific address, use the address lookup or the district's own locator.

If you find an error, we would rather fix it than defend it. Use the corrections page or email us with the ZIP code or district and the source you are relying on.
